30 Guernsey Essentials: Sausmarez Manor

sausmarez manor 01During 2014, we are celebrating 30 years of bringing customers from the UK to the Channel Islands. As part of this celebration, we will be writing about 30 Guernsey essentials, from attractions and outdoor activities to special local food and some lesser-known island treats.

Part 9: Sausmarez Manor

Sausmarez Manor, with its stately facade, extensive gardens and full events calendar, will inevitably be part of your visit to Guernsey, wherever you interests lie. The grounds are beautiful and include subtropical gardens, a fantastic Sculpture Park and a Copper ,Tin and Silversmiths amongst the main highlights. Tours of the manor are available, letting you grasp the history of the place and its colourful inhabitants.

The Subtropical Gardens

Rightly proud of their place in the book ‘1001 Gardens to visit Before You Die’ and of the many mentions in publications such as The Royal Horticultural Society Garden Finder, Sausmarez Manor Subtropical Gardens offer a great oasis of beauty and peace. The vast variety of plants range from Ginger to Giant Echium with anything local in between, including wonderful Camelias and Blue Bells.

Growing and morphing all year long, the gardens’ colours change with each season, getting brighter and brighter throughout spring and summer. Guernsey’s floral fame is brilliantly exhibited here, as are the skills of the gardeners. Take your time to breathe in the many perfumes, to admire and photograph or just delight in wandering along the many garden paths.

ArtParkS Sculpture Park

The ArtParkS Sculpture Park at Sausmarez Manor is part of the National Sculpture Festival which takes place every year here and at only one or two other venues in Britain. The park acts a giant gallery and hosts, displays and sells one of the largest collections of contemporary sculptures in the UK.

Executed in wood, stone, stainless steel and many other materials, you are guaranteed to find something to your taste, especially as artists are happy to take commissions. Being an outdoor venue is part of the originality of the concept and adds a lovely yet unimposing art scene to the manor’s grounds.

Events and Community

Sausmarez Manor is ideally located just south of St. Peter Port, acting as a venue for many types of events. These range from the very popular Farmers’ Market every Saturday morning to crafts workshops, private parties, theatrical productions and musical happenings.

Never short of enthusiasm, the owners have over the years created more than a visitor’s attraction; the manor’s many involvements with various festivals and community events have made it an essential community place.
