Guernsey Bite of the Week: La Fregate Hotel

La Fregate Hotel Restaurant – Guernsey Travel

In the first of our series focusing on Guernsey’s outstanding selection of restaurants, cafes, bars and eateries, we are focusing on the foodie delights of La Fregate Hotel.

The team at Guernsey Travel towers were recently lucky enough to be treated to a hotel tour and an incredibly enjoyable meal.

Commanding some of the most picturesque views over St. Peter Port and across Guernsey’s harbour to the neighbouring islands of Sark, Herm and Jersey, La Fregate Hotel is the perfect place for a celebratory meal or a quiet dinner for two. The bright and airy dining room atmosphere is well complimented by the spacious terrace and cosy bar, perfect for enjoying a glass of wine or spending the afternoon with a coffee and the papers. The fine outlook of the orangery offers an ideal private dining room or space for a welcoming reception.

Head Chef Neil Maginnis has created an interesting and tasty menu with an abundance of local produce and fresh flavours.

Starters include a wide selection of Guernsey seafood, rich meat dishes and fine vegetarian plates. Highlights included the tower of fresh, flaky salmon featuring a citrus dressing, oak smoked salmon and local crab meat spring roll. The fresh Herm oysters are from one of Guernsey’s small sister islands, caught within sight of the hotel terrace and restaurant.

The main courses are a delight to behold, especially the perfectly-cooked rack of lamb with a salty, crispy, moreish bacon rosti and roasted shallots. For the more adventurous diners, the restaurant’s staff will prepare a fresh steak tatare at your table! La Fregate is also a fish-lover’s paradise, with fish main courses including Guernsey sea bass, brill, scallops, skate, crab and lobster.

The desserts continue the sublime trend by being both simple and indulgent. The valrhona hot chocolate fondant was an overwhelming favourite, everybody at the table cooing with approval as the steaming dark chocolate sauce tumbled out of the soft crumbly sponge.

The La Fregate wine list offers an afforable selection of fine house wines, as well as a small collection of worldly wines suited to the connoisseur. Service is attentive and unobtrusive, keeping your glass topped up without distracting from the tasty plates of food beckoning you to eat and enjoy.

La Fregate Hotel is open all year, with rooms from £90 per person per night.
