Guernsey Bite of the Week: Valley Restaurant at the Fermain Valley Hotel

Valley Restaurant, Fermain Valley Hotel

Sitting above one of Guernsey’s most attractive bays yet only a short distance from St. Peter Port, the Fermain Valley Hotel is one of the island’s best 4 star properties. The hotel’s luxurious facilities, stunning views and extensive gardens are perfectly complimented by the outstanding food on offer in the Valley Restaurant, awarded two AA rosettes for fine dining excellence.

The atmosphere at the Valley Restaurant is fresh and informal, with light Mediterranean decor opening onto the hotel’s multi-level terrace and gardens. A highlight of any visit to Guernsey must be a summer’s Sunday lunch of local seafood and a chilled glass or two of wine, perched above Fermain Bay in the sun’s rays.

The Channel Islands foodie scene has seen a real surge of interest in local and seasonal produce during recent years, and the Valley Restaurant is no exception to this rule. The restaurant features a full a la carte as well as a daily table d’hôte menu, summer barbeque menu and dedicated kiddies’ selection, offering diners a wealth of dishes that will appeal to everyone. The stars of the show include locally caught shellfish, fresh Guernsey vegetables, local Guernsey cheeses, butter from the islands’s famous cows, and even a slice or two of Guernsey steak!

The menus at the Valley Restaurant provide a collection of dishes that offer variety of size, taste and texture, from small appetisers to big, bold main courses and treats for the sweet tooth. The focus on local seafood ensures that diners don’t miss out on great Guernsey delicacies; highlights include the simple potato and prawn salad with avocado purée, grilled plaice with mussels, ravioli and saffron sauce, and black bream with minted crushed new potato and a white wine sauce.

If you’re lucky enough to be visiting the Fermain Valley on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday during June, July and August, their summer barbeque menu really can’t be missed. Classics such as home-made beef burgers, potato salad and rib of pork sit alongside interesting dishes of lamb shoulder marinated in Raz Hal Hanoult, aubergine courgette and halloumi skewers, and chargrilled pineapple skewera with stem ginger cream. Add a glass of something cold and fizzy to the mix, and you’re in summer bliss.
