About Lihou Island

A quarter of a mile off the west coast of Guernsey, Lihou island is a small heaven of peace and beauty, only accessible by foot for two weeks a month when the causeway is uncovered.

Lihou Island hosts many nesting birds and a rich marine life can be observed on its shores as the tide goes down. Oyster Catchers, Ringed Plovers and Peregrine Falcons are amongst the species you will spot. This is a site of great environmental importance, protected by the international RAMSAR convention. Visitors must keep within the designated areas to avoid disturbing the wildlife.

The island belongs to the States of Guernsey with The Lihou Charitable Trust looking after the house and its grounds. There are no facilities beyond a borehole for water and solar panels for electricity in Lihou house, which is mainly used for school and youth residential trips. However anyone can apply to rent the house, with accommodation up to 30 people.

Access to the island is via a causeway which is submerged at high tide. The Causeway does not open every day and visitors will need to check the tides times prior to crossing, It takes at least 20 minutes to cross the causeway which should not be crossed if submerged at any point due to the dangerous currents, and should never be crossed at night.
