Sausmarez Manor

The Manor

Sausmarez Manor is frequently described as one of the most interesting, beautiful and varied places in Guernsey, and it’s easy to see why. The Manor offers so much to see and do, whether you want to relax in one of the tranquil gardens or have fun with all the family.

You will have the opportunity to explore the Manor House itself with one of the informative and amusing House Tours. Parts of the Manor are thought to date back to the early 13th or late 12th centuries and the front of the house is regarded as the finest example of Queen Anne Colonial architecture in Britain. The inhabitants of the house have pursued an incredible variety of careers, such as Adventurers, Diplomats, Privateers, Admirals, Generals, Inventors, Politicians, Prelates, Colonial Governors and Artists, making the tour a fascinating 40 minutes or so.

Also available is the alternative Ghost Tour. The ghosts of Sausmarez Manor have been around for almost as long as the house and feature famously in the book, “Stately Ghosts”. The Ghost Tours are usually guided by the Seigneur himself and you will learn about the history of the House and the Island, as well as its various ghosts and hauntings.

Other highlights of the Manor include a mini train for children which trundles through part of the woods alongside the sculpture park for just under a quarter of a mile, as well as a Farmer’s Market that takes place within the grounds every Saturday morning, Happy Hollow 9 hole short course golf, the lake-side café, Affinity Gems, where you can make your own jewellery, and an Edwardian Tin and Coppersmith.

Tropical Garden & Sculpture Park

In the Subtropical Garden you will find a multitude of exotic plants set around two small lakes in an ancient woodland. The Garden has been recommended by the Royal Horticultural Society, “1001 Gardens to Visit Before You Die”, “The Good Garden Guide” and “Which Gardens”. Also set within the grounds of Sausmarez Manor is the internationally renowned Sculpture Park, which has more sculptors exhibiting their works than anywhere else in Britain. With so many artists eager to exhibit in the Park you are certain to find plenty of surprises and pleasures in all sorts of sizes with prices to suit every budget.
