Victoria Tower

The History

Victoria Tower was constructed in 1848 to commemorate the 1846 visit to Guernsey by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The tower was designed by William Colling, drawing inspiration from medieval Italian buildings in order to suggest majesty and prominence. While the building material is largely red granite from Cobo, different types of stonework were incorporated to represent the Queen, her empire and her achievements. The tower was built on land donated by the estate of Peter Mourant and cost around £2000 to build, paid for by public subscription.

The Tower

The Tower stands 100 feet high and offers spectacular views over St. Peter Port and across the water to Herm and Sark. There is no charge for climbing the tower, and a key can be borrowed for a 30 minute period from Guernsey Museum. Visitors must read the safety guidelines before embarking on the 99 steps to the observation tower. A guide book is available to purchase from the museum as a souvenir of your visit.
